Three things that matter…
leadership, context and you.

Three Things that Matter

  • Leadership

Leadership makes a difference across all domains of life and great leaders can have a profound impact on people, organisations and society. That is why we remain deeply committed to the goal of helping individuals and organisations better understand and prepare for their leadership journey.

  • Context

Context matters in leadership. It defines the unique set of conditions and priorities that a leader must step up to. In essence, it shapes the expectations of leaders. There is a direct relationship between context and the skills, experience and attributes required for success.

  • You

Leaders bring a rich portfolio of experiences, tendencies, and aspirations that deeply influence how they approach their role. They bring themselves to the role of leadership. A deeper understand of self (the whole self), allows leaders to better understand how they will handle different situations and contexts.

The Origins of Three Leadership

The role of leadership, and more specifically "great" leadership, has been talked about, debated, and recorded for centuries. In the last 12 months alone, there have been, conservatively 1,000 books and articles published on the subject of leadership. Type “What makes a great leader?” into Google, and you’ll receive around 65 million hits. With so much insight and advice out there, why do we still get it wrong? According to research by leadership consulting firm DDI, just 48% percent of leaders rate the quality of leadership in their organisation as ‘high’ and only one in four HR professionals rate their overall leader quality as ‘high’.

Having spent more than 20 years working in the field of talent and leadership development, I am passionate about leadership. I believe excellence in leadership is fundamental to the success of organisations, and society more broadly. But for some time I have struggled with the overly prescriptive approach taken in much of the literature. Excellence in leadership is often defined by a generic set of capabilities and attributes. These insights are helpful but too often assume the context for leadership is somewhat generic and one-dimensional. The reality is that, in today’s business environment, leadership takes many forms, and the focus and priority of leadership will vary from one situation to another. Furthermore, individuals bring their own set of experiences, tendencies and values that greatly influence how they will respond to certain situations and contexts. The key is helping individuals, teams and organisations understand the interplay of these critical factors so that they are better prepared to confront the myriad of leadership challenges and opportunities they will encounter throughout their leadership journey.
